The Bristol Mum Guide to Free/Cheap Fun for Kids: October Half-Term

If you need ideas of fun and free things to do with the kids this October half-term, this guide should inspire!

There are lots of great free (or very cheap) events from Monday to Friday this week – from dinosaurs to drawing, LEGO to messy play, creating your own Guy Fawkes to pressing apples.

MONDAY 23rd OCTOBER

FULL! 8 & More – Candles: Children’s Scrapstore

A free independent play session for children aged 8+ (drop off session, but adults can stay).

Come and Make Your Own Guy Fawkes: Hartcliffe Community Farm

A fun event running every day of the half term. Come and get creative and make a Guy Fawkes, Scarecrow or a spooky Halloween model!

Bring old clothes and the hay and string will be provided. You can make it in one go or come back as many times as you like!

Either work on your own or work in groups (children to be supervised by an adult at all times).

A prize will be given to the best creation, judging to take place on Sunday 29th October.

LEGO Days at Zion

Do your kids love LEGO? Bring them along for a morning of imaginative building fun, games and competitions with prizes for different age groups, all LEGO supplied!

The Big Draw: Arnolfini

A free afternoon of activities for all ages.

‘The Big Make’ Crafty Cathedral: Bristol Cathedral

This half term’s Crafty Cathedral will link to The Big Draw, the world’s biggest drawing festival. Drop in stick, glue, make and create crafts from around the world. Family tours and trails will be also running. No need to book.

‘Parcels of Comfort’ Children’s Craft Activities: Bishopston Library

Children’s craft activities at the library ideal for ages 4 – 9, to explore the library’s current exhibition, Parcels of Comfort.

Created by Sally Stanley, the exhibition explores the importance and exchange of parcels and post to the troops during the First World War and includes reproduction parcels and post to the troops, recreating the atmosphere of the time.

The Big Pliosaurus Draw: Bristol Museum

Come celebrate The Big Draw and the museum’s family friendly exhibition Pliosaurus!

Find out the secrets of how Doris the pliosaur was created with Tony Hitchcock, the model-maker who brought the pliosaur fossil back to life.

Help make a giant model of a Jurassic creature with the help of Children’s Scrapstore, have a go at our new Explore and Draw trail for budding artists and make and take home origami pliosaur bookmarks or dinosaur egg juggling balls.

Discover Doris’ Secret Den: Bristol Museum

A special tour of the hidden museum vaults where the 8-metre long Doris the Pliosaurus lives when she’s not on display.

Travel down a secret staircase, meet Doris’ weird and wonderful fossil friends, and take the ammonite challenge to learn more about her life at the museum.

Visitors will discover how museum curators look after Doris and have a go at being a curator themselves!

You also get to handle lots of other weird and wonderful fossil creatures.

Tours last up to 30 minutes.

Kwanzaa: Bristol Museum

A Kwanzaa family fun day. Kwanzaa is an African Harvest Festival celebrated in December based on traditional African values including creativity and unity.

Participate in making a Kwanzaa Altar, including items such as candles, traditional Kwanzaa mat and cards; and learn more about African culture through quizzes and more.
