Torwood House School Announced Winner of National Road Safety Competition

Torwood House School in Redland, Bristol is celebrating winning this year’s Design a Road Safety Banner Competition run by local promotional product company and school uniform supplier Recognition Express.

The eye-catching design by eight-year-old, Vinnie Seagrove, showcases this year’s BRAKE Road Safety Week theme: Bike Smart.  The winning entry was selected amongst hundreds received from local primary schools and Torwood House was presented with a 2m x 1m size banner of Vinnie’s design to display at the school during Road Safety Week  which took place on 19th – 25th November.

Vinnie also received a special trophy for his achievement and the school was presented with more than 30 high visibility drawstring bags for pupils, all donated by Recognition Express.

This is the tenth year running that Recognition Express has supported BRAKE Road Safety Week and invited local pupils to design a Road Safety Banner for display at their school.

On presenting the banner to the school, Recognition Express director Matt Richardson explained:

“This competition is one of the highlights of our year and we really look forward to receiving the children’s designs.  The results are always fantastic, and we are sure that Vinnie’s banner will encourage people to think more about road safety and especially those on two wheels.”

Children aged 4 to 11 were asked to design a banner conveying a road safety message of their choice drawn from this year’s Road Safety Week theme: Bike Smart. Over 3000 entries were received nationally, and Vinnie was one of just 12 winners across the country.

Road Safety Week runs from 19-25 November. It is the UK’s biggest road safety event, involving thousands of schools, organisations and communities.

This year’s campaign focuses on the importance of being vigilant to those on two wheels. The number of cyclists is continuing to increase and yet these individuals still remain incredibly vulnerable to death and injury. Drivers will be targeted with a plea to look out for those on two wheels and to fully utilise the ‘latest life-saving technologies’ in their vehicles.

Brake is an independent national road safety charity which exists to stop the deaths and serious injuries that happen on UK roads every day and to care for families bereaved and seriously injured in road crashes.

Brake produces educational road safety literature, runs community training programmes and runs events including Road Safety Week (19-25 November 2018).

Brake’s Fleet Safety Forum provides up-to-date fleet safety resources to fleet managers and runs a year-round programme of events. Brake’s support division cares for road crash victims through a help line and other services.
