Creative Summer Holiday Workshops with Wessex School of Needlework

This Summer the Wessex School of Needlework will be running many creative and artistic workshops for children and young people.

The Summer workshops will take place at Torwood School in Redland, all with the aim of helping people develop practical skills in the creative industry.

There will be textiles workshops teaching you how to create Cloth Dolls, Festival-inspired Headbands and Crowns, Floral Flower Garlands and Fashion Jewellery.

There will also be fashion workshops such as Selfie Like The Stars, How to Move like a Movie Star, Teens and Tweenies Dressmaking Basics, Style Like Celebrities and Couture Embroidery for Teens.

Other workshops include cooking, nutrition, yoga, creative writing and Aromatherapy!

This creative writing workshop is led by award-winning teen author, Kate Frost.

Using her latest books Time Shifters, an award winning time travel adventure trilogy as a starting point, this creative writing session will focus on fuelling the imagination and creating characters and stories through fun, engaging and inspiring activities.

Make Your Own… Craft Workshop
A craft workshop with Gaynor Page, a Professional Wedding Stationer and Crafter.

Bring your creativity to life with these Card-making or box-making workshops where you will learn some basic skills to produce items that will make you look like an expert!

You will learn a minimum of 2 techniques with which, you can:

– Create a Card or Gift Box that you can keep for your own portfolio, or pass on to someone special
– Use the techniques within your Art GCSE or A-level
– Explore the techniques further, for yourself and your own creativity

Floral Flower Crowns
Have you always fancied making your own floral headress? Come and spend a few hours having fun while you make your own flower crown with fresh seasonal flowers. You don’t need to be arty or crafty to come along because it’s a simple technique that is quick and easy to master. Your floral head dress will make the perfect summer party or festival accessory.

This workshop is led by the award-winning florist, Louise Barstow. Tea, Coffee and cake will be included, as will all the materials to make this stunning head dress.

Yoga Chill
A Yoga workshop for kids which is suitable for all levels from beginner to experienced, and will assist with children’s relaxation and well-being.

Yoga improves concentration and energy levels, reduces stress and anxiety, encourages a positive relationship with the body, releases anxiety and feelings of negativity, improves memory retention, maintains flexibility and joint mobility, encourages healthy sleep patterns, improves co-ordination and balance, encourages creativity, self-expression and confidence – and much more.

Nutrition with Nadia: learn what to eat and why
Learn what to eat and why, including a healthy treat making workshop.

Venture into the world of food! You’ll be learning how to make a range of healthy, balanced foods entirely from scratch that you can enjoy during the session. All food is made entirely from natural ingredients and can also be made allergen free.

We will be making savoury dishes – Moroccan Hummus, traditional pitta breads served with delicious side dips. And sweet treats – Nutritious ice creams, chocolate truffles and dark chocolate mousse. *Foods do not contain dairy (milk), nuts or shellfish.

Naturally Chilled Aromatherapy Make & Take Workshop
This fun and creative workshop will start with a quick look at how essential oils are made and how to use them safely.

You’ll discover which essential oils can help to:

-Cope with exam stress

-Improve concentration & focus whilst studying
-Boost confidence & balance moods
-Get a good nights’ sleep

You’ll choose your favourite oils and create your own individual blends. Then you’ll use these blends to make products such as bath salts, body scrubs, shower melts, and inhaler sticks.

Finally, you’ll package your products and create labels for your very own brand to keep for yourself or to give as gifts.

Cooking Like the Pros
Cook like the Pros is a workshop for teens with celebrity chef, Anupreet Attridge. Learn to create wonderful simple impressive meals from around the world for your friends and family.

Each workshop is prepared so there is at least one not so commonly used ingredient included to get the youngsters used to different and exciting food and ingredients to cook with. Each meal will be fun, delicious and colourful.

Couture Embroidery for Teens
A week-long course designed to teach some of the basics of Haute Couture hand Embroidery especially created for teens considering fashion careers.

Students will learn a range of different Techniques used in Haute Couture embroidery to complete a beautiful sample piece.

Techniques include Basic silk shading, Beading, Stumpwork, feather work and goldwork.

Fashion Jewellery Making
Learn how to make the latest trends in Fashion jewellery, making earrings, Necklace and bracelets.

Claire is a freelance designer who studied accessory design at London College of Fashion and both traditional and experimental jewellery at Central St Martins. She has worked with and produced samples for many famous fashion labels.

The workshop will cover the basics of hand making jewellery techniques such as making loops with wire, opening and closing jump rings and attaching findings. Focusing on current jewellery trends for summer you will have the opportunity to produce a coordinating set including earrings and necklace or bracelet.

Never know what to Wear or How to Style it ! Learn tricks and tips from a professional Stylist, Becky Barnes, in this session specifically for teens.

This session will help you learn what suits your personality, your colouring and your body shape. Once you understand these elements, dressing and shopping is both exciting and rewarding; it can help build a strong sense of identity and increase your self-esteem as well as being a LOT of fun!

The workshop will cover 4 key elements:

1/ Discover your style personality – in this session we’ll really understand what matters to you. How do you want to feel in your clothing? Is it important to you to look sporty, trendy or maybe quirky? What would you like to try wearing? What makes you you?

2/ Explore your best colours – here we will use coloured swatches to uncover which colours really suit you and help give you the confidence to bring more colour into your life.

3/ Create your own style board – this is a hands on creative session where we build up a picture of what inspires you. You will be encouraged to move away from trends and more towards what’s right for YOU!

4/ Know the best places to shop for your style – we will finish with a session on the best places to shop to find the pieces that represent your style.

Teens & Tweenies Dressmaking Basics
A week-long sewing course specifically design for teens or tweenies wanting to learn how to use a sewing machine and the basics of dressmaking.
