Bristol Academy of Drama

Affordable drama classes for children aged 7 – 12 with Bristol Academy of Drama which take place each Saturday in term-time at 1532 Performing Arts Centre, Elton Road, BS8 1SR.

Classes are either mornings 9 am – 11 am or afternoons 2.30 – 4.30pm (morning classes are currently fully-booked, however there is a waiting list).

The Academy’s team of facilitators work with students on their team work and confidence skills through drama games and, through improvisation and role play, they learn about the many different theatre styles from mask work to physical theatre and mime to shadow theatre.

BAD’s focus is not on the musical theatre genre although there is plenty of movement and voice work in classes. Their public performances involve classic stories which are specially written for the Academy by their own Writer in Residence.

Students rehearse to be part of full production which takes place in the wonderful Theatre of 1532 Performing Arts Centre where they can show what they have learnt and family and friends can enjoy fun and exciting productions. The chance for the students to perform in such a professional arts space is a real inspiration and an unforgettable experience.

Free trial sessions are available.

The Academy also run holiday workshops over 1 day to 1 week and these range from puppetry to stage combat, play in a day to a week rehearsing and preparing for a full production. These are announced throughout the year so do like their Facebook page to be kept up to date.

Listen to what our parents have to say:

“BAD has been brilliant.  It has given my daughter a deeper insight into the world of drama, theatre and performance and shown her the dedication and hard work needed to put on a performance.  The classes have given her the opportunity to spend time with like-minded individuals from other year groups, learn new techniques and have the thrill of participating in a production. Claire has been very organised, professional and brings a wealth of expertise, experience and enthusiasm to the classes.”
