Fairfield High School Celebrates Ongoing Recognition for Outstanding Maths

Fairfield High School (FHS) has once again been awarded The Prince’s Teaching Institute (PTI) Mark for outstanding teaching in Maths — national recognition of the school’s inspirational delivery, enrichment and commitment to the subject.

Launched over 25 years ago, the PTI Schools Programme recognises excellence in the teaching of a wide range of subjects, regardless of pupils’ backgrounds or abilities. The award highlights departments that strengthen subject knowledge, raise challenge within the curriculum and provide meaningful opportunities beyond the classroom.

Pierre Gerrard, Director of Mathematics at FHS, explains:

“Our commitment to actively engage learners through the demonstration of coherence in lessons has been a contributory factor to this year’s prestigious award. I would like to thank our maths team who work relentlessly to deliver an interesting and varied curriculum, together with plenty of extra-curricular opportunities.”

Vice Principal Cashan Campbell added:

“We are delighted to have been awarded the PTI Mark for our Maths faculty’s innovative work and proudly carry it on our website as evidence of our commitment to inspirational teaching.”

In recent months, the Maths department has demonstrated this commitment through a number of enrichment opportunities, including trips to Oxford and the University of the West of England. These experiences enabled students to engage with mathematics in real-world contexts — from exploring historical scientific ideas to taking part in workshops showcasing the modern applications of maths.

Zoe, a Year 8 student who attended the UWE trip, said:

“We learnt about possible careers and how A-level maths can be very useful. It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed both the lectures and the activities.”

These opportunities, alongside the department’s continued focus on challenge and engagement, played a key role in securing the PTI Mark once again for Fairfield High School.
