
Looking for something educational and hands-on for your home-educated children this spring?
Bristol Museums is running a brilliant series of Home Educator Workshops across January, February and March, designed especially for home-educated children and young people, taking place at M Shed and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.
Led by knowledgeable museum staff and packed with interactive activities and real objects, the sessions cover fascinating topics including Ancient Egypt, Bristol and the Transatlantic Traffic in Enslaved Africans, Evolution, and Bristol and Chocolate.
It’s a great way to bring learning to life, spark curiosity and enjoy time at one of Bristol’s museums with other home-educating families.
Upcoming Home Educator Workshops:
Bristol and the Transatlantic Traffic in Enslaved Africans
When: Wednesday 28th January, 2-3.30pm
Where: Studio 1, M Shed, Princes Wharf, Wapping Rd, BS1 4RN
Suitable for: 12-17 year olds

Bristol’s involvement in the Transatlantic traffic in enslaved Africans lasted a relatively short time in the city’s history as a trading port, but its impact remains evident today.
This structured, museum-led learning session includes completing activities at tables with other learners. During the workshop young people will:
- Investigate historic objects and other evidence
- Investigate the impact of events on Bristol
- Learn about some of those involved in the Transatlantic traffic in enslaved Africans
- Discover the legacy of Bristol’s links with transatlantic slavery
Ancient Egypt
When: 2-3.30pm

Suitable for: 8-12 year olds

This Home Educator workshop about ancient Egypt includes exploring artefacts, trying hieroglyphic writing and playing games, all inspired by our fantastic Egypt gallery.
This structured, museum-led learning session includes completing activities at tables supported by museum staff and volunteers. During this workshop your child will:
- Handle real and replica ancient Egyptian artefacts
- Investigate mystery objects from ancient Egyptian daily life
- Practice ancient Egyptian writing on papyrus (to take home)
- Discuss mummification and play a game
Evolution
When: 1-2.15pm

Suitable for: 9-12 year olds

This Home Educator workshop investigates the topic of Evolution and is a great opportunity for young natural scientists to discover more about the fascinating science of evolution in this special workshop to mark British Science Week.
In this workshop your child will:
- Meet a Natural Sciences Curator and find out more about their work
- Handle real specimens
- Learn about the scientific theory of evolution
- Investigate an evolution ‘case study’ from the museum collection
- Investigate evidence for evolution using fossils and other museum specimens
- Learn scientific terms
- Bust some common myths about evolution

Suitable for: 8-12 year olds

Discover the story of chocolate and its links to Bristol!
Find out about its evolution in the city and unwrap the stories of the people who made it.
During this workshop your child will:
- Discover how the story of chocolate began with the Maya and the Aztecs
- Find out about Bristol’s chocolate heritage and the evolution of chocolate in the city
- Handle and investigate real objects from the city’s former chocolate factories, that are now looked after in the museum’s collections
- Taste chocolate recipes
- Find out how chocolate is made – from bean to bar
- Make a chocolate-scented craft

Each of the workshops provides an inspiring and fun way for home-educated children to learn together in Bristol.
