As part of its commitment to celebrating a wide range of religious and cultural events, pupils at May Park Primary School enjoyed a vibrant celebration to mark Chinese New Year, learning about traditions, culture and festivities through special guests and a variety of hands-on activities.
The school welcomed the Bristol University Lion Dance Troupe, who performed an exciting double lion dance for the children. The energetic performance brought the sounds, colour and movement of traditional Chinese celebrations into the school hall – much to the delight of the audience!
Children had the opportunity to take part in a range of arts and crafts activities. They also received chocolate coins in traditional red packets and had the chance to sample prawn crackers and fortune cookies. Some even challenged themselves to eat noodles using chopsticks.

May Park was pleased to welcome volunteer Ms Priscilla Ko, who delivered a presentation introducing the traditions and meaning behind Chinese New Year. Through stories, songs and discussion, pupils learned about the cultural significance of the festival and how it is celebrated around the world.
Ms Ko said: “Volunteering at May Park Primary School was a truly meaningful experience. Thanks for the school’s invitation and giving me such a valuable opportunity to introduce the traditions of Chinese New Year and share the meaning behind this important festival. It was especially heartwarming to celebrate together with the students through laughter and songs. Seeing their joy and curiosity made the experience even more rewarding, and I am thankful to have been part of such a wonderful celebration.”
