Today Bristol Mum features a school review by local a mum who has a 9-year-old in Year 5 at Filton Avenue Primary School. This school opened in September 2015 and was formed from the amalgamation of Filton Avenue Infants and Junior Schools. It is based on two sites: Orchard Campus and Lockleaze Road.
Was Filton Avenue Primary School your first choice and if so, why?
No, and I actually appealed against the decision (the Junior School were in special measures when Joe started at the Infant School and I was concerned about this. Also, we were in the process of getting a diagnosis of high functioning autism at the time he was moving from nursery to Reception.
What are the positive aspects of this school?
Inclusion, particularly at the lower end of the school. All children are challenged and stretched.
What (if any) are weaknesses of this school?
Communication, though this is improving and the senior management team are keen to increase parental involvement at all levels.
What do you think of the school building, facilities and size of the school?
It is a large school, across two sites, with three classes in each year group at Lockleaze Road and one class in each year (currently Reception to year 3) at Orchard Campus. Currently approx 750 in the school.
What do you think of the staff?
Very approachable and supportive (may be as much to do with my approach as theirs). Every teacher my son has had has been great.
What are the school’s values?
“Together on a journey to success”.
Inclusion.
Do kids receive homework/reading/tasks do do at home?
Yes, all issued dependent on the child’s ability. For instance, three different sets of spellings.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The school has been amazing for Joe and he has a fantastic group of friends who are really supportive and understanding.
