There are currently 40 local Families® Magazines in the UK and Families is aiming to launch number 41 in Bristol and Bath!

Families® Magazine is a successful, highly-regarded magazine franchise which has been publishing since 1990. A new  franchisee is needed to launch and run Families® Bristol and Bath and become the Editor.

This is a flexible, home-based opportunity which would suit you (or someone you know) if you are interested in starting and growing your own business with the backing and support of a well-established brand.

So what is Families® Magazine?

Published 6 times a year, Families® Magazine is a free local publication for parents and carers of children ages 0 to 12. Distributed by schools, nurseries, libraries and other venues which families frequently visit, each issue of the magazine is filled with fabulous information about local days out, family activities and events, and kids’ classes and clubs, as well as useful articles about education, childcare, parenting and health.

Families® Magazine is loved by local parents who find the content invaluable so, as Editor, you play a vital and rewarding role in bringing essential information to your community.

What is it like to be a Families® Franchisee and Editor?

Rebecca Carr from Southampton currently owns three Families® Magazine franchises, publishing magazines in Hampshire West, Hampshire North and East Kent.

“I have been a Families® Editor for over 7 years now. I purchased Hampshire West, a 2 year old magazine, in 2011 and Hampshire North in 2016. Last year, I started a franchise from scratch in East Kent!

“I published my first magazine in East Kent last January and it’s been received amazingly warmly by advertisers and readers. It’s already growing into a really successful business and complement my two existing magazines.

“Hampshire West and Hampshire North franchises have grown considerably in my time as owner. I have built a great relationship with advertisers in the area who now book advertising with me year-on-year. They all feel they need to be seen in Families. I have built a solid team to work with me on the publications providing support with sales, distribution and social media. My publications are going from strength to strength and my turnover has grown almost 30% between 2017 and 2018.

“Running multiple magazines is hard work and requires you to be highly organised and self-motivated. But it is also challenging and rewarding when you get your magazine back from the printer and see the results of all the effort – something that parents love to read. I much prefer working for myself and from home, organising my own time and not having to do the daily commute or deal with office politics. However, there is also a great group of other Editors in the franchise network who are there to support each other via in-house ‘chats’ – and fantastic support from our Head Office!”

What skills and time do you need?

Motivation and ambition are key.

You need to:

  • Want to run and grow a business, set targets and strive to beat them in order to maximise the money you make for your family
  • Be a tenacious seller, with previous sales experience or a willingness and drive to get out there do it
  • Have 25 to 30 hours a week available to run your franchise
  • Desire to share with other parents all the great family-friendly things that Bristol and Bath have to offer!
