A Thoroughly Family Friendly Meal at The Battleaxes, Wraxall

If you are a mum or dad to young children, you will know that eating out is not often a stress-free outing. It is highly uncomfortable when you know that your children are creating a disturbance.

So when children are actively welcomed by friendly staff and you are made to feel at ease, it therefore makes for a far more relaxing experience.

We had a really good eating-out experience last weekend at The Battleaxes Gastro Pub in Wraxall. The Battleaxes is a country pub which serves home cooked food all day, and, more importantly, welcomes kids.

Living in the city, it made a change to venture out into the country and eat out at a pub surrounded by green fields and trees.

When we arrived at The Battleaxes, we were all greeted by a really friendly member of staff who showed us to our table and who immediately gave my kids colouring in activity sheets and pencil crayons, along with menus. There was also a table piled with games and activities should my children tire of their colouring in.

The Battleaxes is a beautiful pub with country-style decor befitting its location and its history; it was originally built for the workers on the Tyntesfield Estate several hundred years ago.

There are scrubbed floorboards and flagstones, original church pews to sit on, and old photos and paintings of Tyntesfield workers and of hunting scenes and horses; a slice of what country life was like many years ago. My little boy loved exploring the pub and looking at the pictures.

Being a Sunday, my husband and I both opted for a roast dinner and my kids chose a meal from the kids menu: fish and chips for my son and spaghetti bolognaise for my daughter.

When our food arrived we were very happy with it: portions were big and the food was delicious. My roast chicken came with perfect roasties, and, not one, but two lovely Yorkshire puds! Accompaniments included cauliflower cheese, baby carrots, red cabbage and gravy.

My kids made short work of their meals. Of course, we had to go for pudding too. My kids went for the ice-cream option on the kids menu and specified the colour ice-cream they wanted.

I opted for the Sticky toffee Pudding. Honestly, I think this was the most divine Sticky Toffee Pudding I have ever had!

The staff were lovely throughout our meal, often checking that we were okay and we had everything we needed, for example offering us an extra helping of gravy. They were also very patient and friendly with my kids and made a real effort to listen to them.

My family and I will definitely return to The Battleaxes and I certainly recommend it to other parents: it has great food, lovely decor, friendly staff and is thoroughly family friendly.
