Donations to Bristol Baby Bank doubled in one day – more volunteers now needed!

Bristol Baby Bank Network started 2016 with a donation event which saw over 100 car loads of baby items donated to help families in need.

Just a few hours at the Big Yellow Storage unit in St Phillips saw a whopping 102 people arrive to donate baby clothes, changing mats, Moses baskets, prams, toys and more – that’s exactly the same number as the number of families helped by Baby Bank Network in its first six months.

Volunteer Natalie Bond, who runs the Baby Bank Network blog, said: “We had over 100 cars and people come and donate items today, some of those cars full to bursting with beautiful items.  Not only did we have an enormous amount of donations, but some of you were so kind to have washed, sorted and labelled everything before you arrived. We cannot thank our Baby Bank Network community enough.”

The charitable organisation is now launching an urgent appeal for more volunteers to help sort, prepare and pack the items before they can be distributed to families across Bristol.

Baby Bank Network was set up by volunteers in 2015 and continues to operate thanks to a team of around 30 Bristol parents working hard to process referrals. With a record number of donations now in, more volunteers are needed to help prepare and distribute referral packs and check and clean prams.

Volunteers are also sought for a range of other key positions, including helping out at events, contributing to social media campaigns and fundraising. Would-be volunteers are invited to a volunteer open event at KudaCan in Bishopston from 3.30pm-5.30pm on Sunday 24th January. You can also email volunteers@babybanknetwork.com for more information.

Volunteer Co-ordinator Georgina Cairns said: “We wouldn’t exist without volunteers. There are so many different ways you can help – from a couple of hours every now and then helping man a stall at an event or monitoring the social media feeds to an evening sorting items at our unit in Southmead and pulling together information for grant proposals. It’s a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and make a real difference to families in need.”
