Last week I went on a fantastic baby and children’s first aid course with Mini First Aid Bristol.

Mini First Aid Bristol courses are small two-hour sessions and are especially for mums, dads, grandparents and carers of babies and children. Sessions are held all over Bristol at a range of times on both weekdays and weekends so as to fit around anyone, regardless of their work, time or family commitments.

Plus, babies and young children are welcome too!

Mini First Aid Bristol is run by Zoe Hunt, a Bristol mum of two children who is passionate about children’s first aid. Before becoming a mum, Zoe worked as part of the senior cabin crew of a major airline, and is highly qualified and experienced at emergency first aid.

The Mini First Aid class which I went to was held at Playful Café in Bishopston. We all sat in a small semi-circle with brightly coloured mats for the babies to lie/play/crawl on.

Zoe is friendly and approachable and made everyone there feel welcome and at ease. She is engaging and made us laugh, too.

The class covered the following first aid scenarios, a comprehensive list indeed:

• The essential first aid items you should have in your home
• Emergency numbers to call – both in the UK and abroad
• CPR
• Burns
• Bleeding
• Shock
• Choking
• Meningitis – signs, symptoms
• Febrile seizures and convulsions
• Head bumps
• Broken bones

Everyone at the class was also given free Mini First Aid booklets which contains all of the above first aid scenarios and treatments.

The session was well-organised, as well as interesting and informative; Zoe broke all the first aid treatments into a step-by-step approach and answered all our questions throughout. She is engaging and made us laugh, too.

And, as well as learning about first aid, we all had a go at practising it too, thus putting our new first aid knowledge into action!

I learned loads on Zoe’s Mini First Aid Course. While I hope that no first aid situations should ever arise with my own children, I now have the confidence and know-how in knowing how to deal with them if they did.
