If you want to get out in the fresh air and make the most of the Winter sunshine, there are some lovely walks to enjoy with kids in Bristol and beyond.
My family and I have recently discovered some wonderful new places to explore.
Following our visit to the stone circles in Stanton Drew last week, we decided to take a Winter walk in Abbots Leigh, a beautiful old village just across the Clifton Suspension Bridge, about 3 miles from the centre of Bristol.
Many of the houses and churches around Abbots Leigh are centuries-old so it is also a great place to explore if you and your children enjoy history.
There are several little walks to enjoy around Abbots Leigh and Church Road is just one of them, perfect if you have little ones with you as it is not too long – you can walk the full stretch of it and back again without it being too much for little legs (and your own, too).
Plus, Church Road is quiet and peaceful with rarely any traffic so it is a safe walk to enjoy, too.
There are also some beautiful old houses and a little church to admire as you stroll along Church Road – all overlooked by rolling green hills.
And, as my children discovered to their delight on our stroll up Church Road, there is a great little play area with lots of green space to enjoy!
Situated on the site of the old primary school playing field, ‘The Old School Field’ offers some good modern play equipment and fantastic green space to enjoy – perfect for a run-around or a game of football.
The includes swings for both older kids and little ones, too, plus a climbing frame, gazebo and a little activity course to master which my kids got stuck into.
There are also picnic benches and seating, altogether making it a perfect spot for a picnic in the Summer months!
If, after your children have had a play in the play area and you have walked the full stretch of Church Road, you aren’t quite ready to go home, you can also go on a little adventure beyond the edge of the play area and explore those rolling green hills like we did!
At the bottom of the play area there is a little stile which you can climb over to roam the green fields beyond it. My family and I followed the rough track up the hill – it felt good to be out in the fresh air surrounded by beautiful countryside!
I must warn you, if you decide to do this walk up through the fields, Wellies are essential – it is very muddy! And because of the mud and the rough terrain, it would be unsuitable for buggies.
You can continue walking until you come out onto Home Farm Road – follow this short stretch down until you came to Church Road again – I must point out that Home Farm Road is a main road with fast cars so please do take care!
My family and I really enjoyed our Winter walk through this part of beautiful, peaceful Abbots Leigh.
Church Road and its great play area, plus the green space beyond it offers some wonderful family walks throughout the seasons!
