This month children and families in Bristol can enjoy a fairytale opera performance of Puss in Boots by Touring Opera Company, Tessitoura.
The fairytale opera has been composed by Russian composer Cesar Cui and has been translated, adapted, and directed, by Sophie Kirk-Harris for children of all ages (and grown ups) to enjoy. The plot follows very closely the story by Charles Perrault and tells of a cat who uses trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth and the hand of a princess in marriage for his penniless and low born master.
The semi-staged UK premiere of this short opera for all ages is sung in English with piano accompaniment and includes children and young people aged 4-18 as the chorus of courtiers, princess’s girlfriends, reapers and servants, supported by a professional adult cast.
This production is the pilot for a workshop and performance project to ultimately take into schools as an introduction to the beauty of opera in a really accessible way.
Tessitoura aims to demystify opera, bringing it into the hearts of as many young people as possible in line with their ambition of ‘Opera for all’.
